Another Friday another entry into our feature The Tens. This week we’ve got one of my favourite artists duce who recently released Sunday Night Insomnia III with the rest of the Get Well Soon collective.
If you don’t know who duce is then check his most recent solo release Marla and you’ll see why we’re always excited when he releases music and why we think he is one of the most under-ratted artists out there.
Go past the break to check out his favourite songs at the moment as well as songs that influence him. As always the words are duce’s.
St. Vincent – Chloe in the Afternoon or Dilettante
I used to skip these without listening. I love these tracks. She composes and writes her own stuff.. These compositions tho? I think i love St. Vincent. Someone tell her.
Lil Ugly Mane – MY HXXD | MY HOOD
When the sample progresses, something about that sound just feels perfect.
ScHoolboy Q – My Hatin Joint
Sometimes i just want every last one of these bitches.
Key – Shake A Leg ft. Curtis Williams & Sonny Digital)
When this song comes on, volume goes up, windows go down. I don’t care what the weather is like. I don’t care who watching.
Floral Shoppe – Track 2
This is the main type of music I been listening to. This is what I wanna make.
Five songs that influence duce:
Blu, Mibbs & Pac Div Freestyle
I listened to this like 6 days straight right before I recorded my first track. I wrote my first recorded song to this beat (which eventually went to the classic carlito beat; background adlibs from lucas and lito included) the Mibbs influence is heavy on my first track lol. And thats when i started tellin people Blu was greatest out. noone would argue cause they aint know who i was talking about haha.
Madvillain – All Caps
Really all Madvillain, but this, raid, and fancy clown especially. me and sheila used to talk about this on aim all night.
Cowboy Bebop – Green Bird
This is when I first started understand… um… emotion and juxtaposition. This song is so beautiful.
Snoop Dogg & Pharell – Let’s Get Blown
I used to listen to this on my PSP with my lil 10 cent headphones. Production is major to me, and this was like amazing to me.
Flying Lotus – RobertaFlack
I remember listening to Los Angeles and not going to sleep one night. I was the saddest I had ever been over a lady. like I was just brain dead, this was all I listened to for that whole night. no tv, no computer. just this album from like 11 pm to 9 am. this album made me realize, too, as far as production, I was incredibly weak. lol at that time, I was at my ultimate bum level.
9th wonder. he was one of the main producers that made me realize this was all within grasp, that I could do it. my first beats were carbon copy 9th wonder style.
also, I wanna mention nas, prodigy, mos def, meth, ghost, pac, souls of mischief, pharcyde, eazy-e… they never made me really want to rap I guess, I just wanted to listen to them more and more. That’s the best way I can think of to explain why they were left out songs that made me wanna start making music. But they definitely influenced.
